about

The Fourmasons ‘Live at Peggy’s Skylight’

Improvisations and impressions around tunes such as Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise (Romberg/Hammerstein), In a Sentimental Mood (Duke Ellington), Ralph's Piano Waltz (John Abercrombie), Blue Monk (Thelonious Monk), Days of Wine and Roses (Mancini/Mercer), plus an original tune penned by The Fourmasons' very own Peter Houtman: Yes, We've Met.

Recorded live at Peggy's Skylight, Nottingham, UK.
Saturday September 5th, 2020.

Peggy’s booker, Paul Deats, had put out a call looking for artists to get back and help establish post-lockdown gigs at their fabulous venue. The team there had done an amazing job in organising tools to run events online, paired with a takeaway service from their in-house kitchen. By the time our date came round, Nottingham’s C19 restrictions had been eased and the gig ran as a hybrid event of online livestream plus a physical audience in the venue, in two sittings, as ‘Twilight’ at 6pm and ‘Highlight’ from 8pm. We really liked the idea of playing these extended sets as it harkened back to the days of the original jazz club formats - only not finishing quite so late!
With the gig being streamed, Paul had also kindly offered to record the audio feeds and these form the basis of what you hear on this album. Enjoy!
